Congenital Cataract

This cataract was less obvious on initial exam. When the pupil was not dilated, only a hint of white was appreciated. The more notable finding was the lack of a red reflex. (This can be appreciated here -- the camera flash would be expected to cause "red eye", but didn't). After dilating drops were placed, the opacity was more visible. Even though this cataract is not as dense as the one in the previous photo, surgical correction within the first two months of life is still necessary to preserve sight.
