Cup Ear

Also known as "prominent ear", cup ear refers to an auricle shape that stands away from the head at the superior, posterior, and inferior aspects. In the past, this ear morphology was thought to be an indicator of underlying neuromuscular pathology, but more recent experience does not seem to support this theory. In the absence of other abnormalities on physical examination, this finding is only of cosmetic concern. When severe, corrective surgery can be done when the child is older to minimize the prominent profile.
